How to Setup a Game - App

With ChessUp you have various ways to enjoy a game of Chess. You can play stand alone with an OTB(over the board) opponent or against the AI and you can also play games using the app. The app allows for games to be played against the Stockfish AI, OTB, or remote play with someone in the ChessUp community or Lichess (Chess.com coming soon).

Play a Game Against the AI

  1. When you launch the app it will default to the Play page.

  1. Press AI Opponent button and this will switch to the Name Game page.

  1. Once here you have several settings you can adjust with the first being the amount of assistance you will receive. Assistance shows up as different colors on the board. See this article for more information of the color options: AI Assistance - Colors
  2. Next you can turn the hint limit on or keep to the default off. See this article for more information on hint limit: Hint Limit
  3. Next you will select if you want to play as the white pieces or the black pieces.
  4. You can also set a time format. Tap the toggle switch to turn it on. You can swipe right to see all the options.
  5. Next, you can select you opponent. In this case you can select AI.
  6. When AI is selected you can choose the AI's strength (how difficult it is). It will show the approximate ELO level for the different AI settings.
  7. Lastly, press the start game button.
  8. If you are playing as white you will make the first move otherwise the AI will move first if it's playing as white. When playing on the board the winged knight will flash indicating the AI is thinking. When it makes a move you will see a purple light indicating which piece to move and a line of blue lights. The last blue light (which also blinks) is where you will move the piece for the AI. Once the AI's piece is moved you can make your move.

Play a Game OTB (over the board)

  1. Click on 2 Player & follow steps 1-6 from above to start the setup.
  2. Next, choose the assistance level for the other OTB opponent. See this link here to learn more about AI Assistance - Colors.

  3. If you are playing someone who is also a ChessUp user (meaning they have a ChessUp account) you can select them as an OTB opponent so that they can have a record of the game as well. Only those users who are online can be selected. Online status is indicated with the green line below there avatar.
  4. Lastly, press the Start Game button.
  5. White makes the first move.
